The Grapes of Wrath

Community Co

The Citizens Community Company return to the main stage with their version of Steinbeck’s classic. The Grapes Of Wrath is a story about the endurance of the human spirit and how simple solidarity can pull a population through its darkest times.

Driven from their home, the Joad family make the monumental trek westward to California, joining thousands of other migrants in search of land, jobs and dignity.  Seduced by the prospect of a new life they invest everything they have in the journey.  Their hopes rise and crumble as they struggle to survive the crossing - California may not be the promised land after all.

Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s epic American novel about the Great Depression is given new life by this 30-strong community cast, the perfect canvas for a large ensemble, in a timely production about human resilience in the face of economic exploitation.

Love this theatre. Hope I get a chance to visit it again sometime. My favourite area was below the stage floor although the trapdoors were a bit scary.

The gradual decline of Morris' life is heartbreaking! Good performances from both actors.

Beautifully cast and performed. I'm not a big play goer but maybe I should be more. Thanks

Fabulous performances. Billy Mack is yet again outstanding and Michele Gallagher supports him brilliantly in this harrowing account of Morris's alcoholism. You could hear a pin drop at the end. Brilliant!

Dear, Sir/Madam I am interested in taking part in the night school as i have just finished the ETA course at the RSAMD. However I am 21 just now and see that this course is for over 22, would I still be able to take part? Is there someone I should be contacting directly? Thanks for any help you can offer. Billy Mack captures the fine line of alcoholism brilliantly. An innocent drink for breakfast, why not? A few pints for lunch? It would be rude not to. This excellent portrayal is a captivating insight into a world where only a drink a will do.

I'm interested in the three session writing course but I must say it's a tad inconvenient that there's no e-mail address to which to send an 'application.'

Hi Sean, We were planning to receive all applications by post, but I've made a special request and Jeremy has now provided his email address. Hence, you can now submit applications directly to jeremy(at)citz.co.uk Helen

Hi Kimberley, I will pass your comment on to our project co-ordinator for consideration. The reason we say 22+, is simply that we provide drama classes for 4-15s, Young Co. for 16-21s and Nightschool for 22+. I can see that at 21 already you are unlikely to join Young Co. for such a short space of time. We'll get back to you directly if there's space.

It Was The Best Show I Have Been To

What a brilliant piece of theatre. The writing was awesome and all performances excellent. One of those nights, that reinforces the power of good theatre. Well done.

Was there last night. Very good. Great performances from Siobhan Redmond, Una McLean and Anne Lacey. Loved the 'footballers wives' set. I thought there might be a problem moving the action to modern Glasgow, not least the question of why they'd all be shut up together but I think Rona Munro pulled it off rather well. Was the El Paso sign recycled from another production? Pal Joey? It made me think of the one time pub in Barlanark but I'm sure that was not intentional, was it?

Brilliant, agree with Marie, one of the best shows I have ever seen. Takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, shock, laughter, near tears. The cast are outstanding particularly Siobhan Redmond and Myra McFadyen. The Glasgow patter is fab!

I visited Glasgow for the first time last week and booked to see The Pillowman (one of my favourite plays) at the Citizen Theatre. I just wanted to let you and the whole team at your theatre know how impressed and delighted I was by the whole experience. The performance was really excellent with an inventive use of props that managed to convey the power of the play while delivering the black humour so brilliantly. But it was not just the performance that delighted me so much; every member of staff in front of house roles were warm, friendly and helpful and the general vibe of the whole environment was relaxed and welcoming. Reading some of the literature concerning the theatre just continued the impression of an exciting, talented and inclusive theatre that really reaches out into it’s local community. I could go on but would become fairly sycophantic so probably best to finish by simply saying thank you and good luck with all your future plans.
