The Pillowman

Visiting Company

ARCHIVE

XLC Theatre Company were brought back in 2009 by special invitation with their acclaimed version of The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh.

“Once Upon A Time…” will never be the same again.

The gruesome tale of a short story writer living in a totalitarian state seems to mirror the disappearance of local schoolchildren.  A rollercoaster ride of comedy and cruelty that leads to a shocking and hilariously macabre examination of authoritarian brutality.

Presented by XLC in association with the Citizens Theatre.

I visited Glasgow for the first time last week and booked to see The Pillowman (one of my favourite plays) at the Citizen Theatre. I just wanted to let you and the whole team at your theatre know how impressed and delighted I was by the whole experience. The performance was really excellent with an inventive use of props that managed to convey the power of the play while delivering the black humour so brilliantly. But it was not just the performance that delighted me so much; every member of staff in front of house roles were warm, friendly and helpful and the general vibe of the whole environment was relaxed and welcoming. Reading some of the literature concerning the theatre just continued the impression of an exciting, talented and inclusive theatre that really reaches out into it’s local community. I could go on but would become fairly sycophantic so probably best to finish by simply saying thank you and good luck with all your future plans.

What a brilliant piece of theatre. The writing was awesome and all performances excellent. One of those nights, that reinforces the power of good theatre. Well done.
