Platform 2:10

Learning

In 2010, Citizens Learning is delivering two multi-artform projects in Scottish Prisons, as part of the Scottish Arts Council funded Inspiring Change initiative. Platform 2:10 is a performance project in HMP Barlinnie delivered in partnership with Motherwell College.

In Autumn, our team of professional theatre-makers will work with over 50 inmates to create a performance inspired by the idea of change. A freed man, stands on a railway platform facing life’s choices. Participants will perform for other inmates and staff at Barlinnie, as well as their family, friends and specially invited guests on 17-19 November.

This ambitious project will provide performance opportunities as well as production and technical roles for prisoners. The production will have music at its core, allowing the team to utilise already well established music groups from within the prison.

This project will be directed by experienced prison arts practitioner Elly Goodman and Citizens Community Drama Director, Neil Packham. The team will be completed with a music director, designer, costume designer and production team.

A joint statement from Jim Tough (Scottish Arts Council) and Mike Ewart (Scottish Prison Service) said:

“Human creativity is the engine by which we innovate, grow and define how we wish to live our lives.”

By introducing the possibility of change to some of the most vulnerable and damaged in our communities, the Citizens Theatre hopes to make a significant contribution to their rehabilitation. We aim to inspire change, by helping to develop new skills, attitudes and opportunities. The statement went on to say:

“The visual arts and film develop perceptual abilities and individuals’ recognition of their relationship to others; drama, theatre and performance allow exploration of role-playing and self-confidence; the patterns inherent in music can encourage development of language and communication skills. Creative activity builds trust, co-operation and respect”.
