The Monster in the Hall
TAG
A new play by David Greig, at the Citizens and touring in Autumn 2010.
Duck Macatarsney cares for her biker dad whose MS is getting increasingly bad. Her Dad - Duke - is a spliff smoking (for medicinal reasons you understand), bike riding, heavy metal loving, horror movie loving, pizza eating widower who’s brought up Duck since the death of her Mother in a crash. The two of them are just about surviving when one morning the Duke wakes up blind and the Duck hears that the Social Services are coming to take her away.
The Monster in the Hall follows Duck as she tries to protect her world from the terrifying prospect of change.
A low budget indie comedy musical about a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown played out by four actors and a big fat motorbike which goes vrrooommm.
A new play from the same team that created the smash hit Yellow Moon (Best Show for Children and Young People TMA Awards 2007).

I visited Glasgow for the first time last week and booked to see The Pillowman (one of my favourite plays) at the Citizen Theatre. I just wanted to let you and the whole team at your theatre know how impressed and delighted I was by the whole experience. The performance was really excellent with an inventive use of props that managed to convey the power of the play while delivering the black humour so brilliantly. But it was not just the performance that delighted me so much; every member of staff in front of house roles were warm, friendly and helpful and the general vibe of the whole environment was relaxed and welcoming. Reading some of the literature concerning the theatre just continued the impression of an exciting, talented and inclusive theatre that really reaches out into it’s local community. I could go on but would become fairly sycophantic so probably best to finish by simply saying thank you and good luck with all your future plans.

Brilliant, agree with Marie, one of the best shows I have ever seen. Takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, shock, laughter, near tears. The cast are outstanding particularly Siobhan Redmond and Myra McFadyen. The Glasgow patter is fab!

Was there last night. Very good. Great performances from Siobhan Redmond, Una McLean and Anne Lacey. Loved the 'footballers wives' set. I thought there might be a problem moving the action to modern Glasgow, not least the question of why they'd all be shut up together but I think Rona Munro pulled it off rather well. Was the El Paso sign recycled from another production? Pal Joey? It made me think of the one time pub in Barlanark but I'm sure that was not intentional, was it?

What a brilliant piece of theatre. The writing was awesome and all performances excellent. One of those nights, that reinforces the power of good theatre. Well done.

I'm interested in the three session writing course but I must say it's a tad inconvenient that there's no e-mail address to which to send an 'application.'

Billy Mack captures the fine line of alcoholism brilliantly. An innocent drink for breakfast, why not? A few pints for lunch? It would be rude not to. This excellent portrayal is a captivating insight into a world where only a drink a will do.

Fabulous performances. Billy Mack is yet again outstanding and Michele Gallagher supports him brilliantly in this harrowing account of Morris's alcoholism. You could hear a pin drop at the end. Brilliant!

The gradual decline of Morris' life is heartbreaking! Good performances from both actors.

Love this theatre. Hope I get a chance to visit it again sometime. My favourite area was below the stage floor although the trapdoors were a bit scary.

What an terrible peformance last night! Felt like we were watching a school play it was that amateurish. Lines were either fluffed, inaudible or just plain incomprensible. The Panto season must have begun early at the Citizens. Ham anyone? On the plus side, the set was good and the costumes were pretty funky. Just a shame about the acting.
