What we do

Strengthening connections in communities and removing barriers to cultural participation

Our work goes beyond our building. We connect with local communities where they are, taking time to listen, build trust, and challenge assumptions about what theatre is and who it’s for.

Each project we deliver is unique – shaped by the people taking part. Activities might include songwriting, drama, craft or visual arts, and are always designed in close partnership with third-sector organisations to meet the needs of each group.

Navigate

Navigate aims to create meaningful and long-term opportunities for communities often marginalised from cultural and civic life.

It will deepen our partnerships with third sector and charity organisations that share our values. Kicking off in October 2025, there are two core parts. Navigate reinforces the building as a meaningful home to our communities, ensuring people feel safe and respected.

Navigate: In Residence

Creating long-term cultural opportunities for Global Majority community groups – particularly those adversely impacted by the UK’s asylum and immigration policies.

Residencies will take place within the partner organisations’ spaces. We’ll offer tailored creative engagement, exploring how creativity can be a vital part of how people sustain themselves and rebuild their lives. Each residency is 18 months and will see groups work towards sharings in our building. Participants will also benefit from access to theatre performances at the Citz.

Local partners include Gorbals-based Freedom from Torture, supporting individuals who have experienced torture and persecution, and Amma Birth Companions, providing pregnancy, birth, and postnatal support to those facing isolation and inequality.

Navigate: Come Away In

Providing an artistic home for community arts groups who are disproportionately impacted by inequality and inequity.

It builds on our legacy of partnership working and responds to the increasing need across Glasgow for regular, accessible spaces. These spaces are essential for creating the conditions for community groups to thrive. Glasgow has a rich history of grassroots creative groups leading the change they wish to see. Across the next few years, we will host a range of groups, including local charity Standing Tall Scotland.

All We Can Do

Creative spaces for women navigating the effects of homelessness, poverty, addiction, and the criminal justice system.

Through workshops hosted in partnership with frontline organisations, All We Can Do creates safe, supportive spaces for women to explore the issues affecting their lives — and to express themselves through theatre, music, visual art, and spoken word.

This strand builds on our long-standing commitment to working with women’s groups across the community.

All We Can Do is supported by National Lottery Awards for All, a small family charitable trust and the William Syson Foundation.
