Iconic classics, award-winning drama and a spectacular new musical for 2027

We’re excited to reveal the first productions in our 2027 season, bringing together Scottish classics, award-winning new writing and large-scale musical theatre in a programme packed with stories that feel as relevant today as ever.

The new season includes a major new production celebrating the 40th anniversary of Liz Lochhead’s Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off, directed by Finn den Hertog. Our Artistic Director Dominic Hill will direct Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman in our first co-production with York Theatre Royal. We’ll also welcome the Olivier Award-winning Punch for its only Scottish stop on a UK tour, before presenting a major new Scottish-made production of Guys and Dolls alongside the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Aberdeen Performing Arts, Eden Court Inverness and Dundee Rep Theatre.

Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off (12 February – 06 March) – We open the season with a major new production celebrating the 40th anniversary of Liz Lochhead’s iconic Scottish play. First premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 1987, and presented at the Citz for the first time in 2027, this sharp, witty and powerful exploration of Scottish history, identity and power is directed by acclaimed Scottish theatre-maker Finn den Hertog.
Punch (30 March – 03 April) – Nottingham Playhouse, in association with KPPL Productions, Mark Gordon Pictures and Eilene Davidson Productions, brings the Olivier Award-winning Punch to the Citz for the only Scottish date on its UK tour. Based on Jacob Dunne’s memoir, this gripping true story explores toxic masculinity, retribution and redemption after a single, unprovoked punch changed lives forever.
Death of a Salesman (07 April – 01 May) – We’re partnering with York Theatre Royal for the first time to present Arthur Miller’s timeless masterpiece, directed by our Artistic Director Dominic Hill. Premiering in York before transferring to Glasgow, this powerful drama follows Willy Loman’s pursuit of the American Dream and remains as relevant and thought-provoking today.
Guys and Dolls (04 – 15 May) – We round off the season with a spectacular new Scottish-made production of the Broadway classic, created with the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Aberdeen Performing Arts, Eden Court Inverness and Dundee Rep Theatre. Directed by James Brining and featuring a live band, and large ensemble cast, this irresistible musical transports audiences from the streets of 1950s New York to the heart of Havana.

“From landmark revivals to award-winning new writing, the first shows in our 2027 season showcase a range of stories and theatrical experiences that respond to the world around us. Death of a Salesman is one of the most influential works of the 20th century and incredibly timely in the age of Donald Trump’s politics of greed and toxic masculinity. Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off is a Scottish classic about two 16th century queens but the tensions over gender and religion still haunt us today. As we begin rehearsals for 1984, the resonance with current daily headlines of division is astonishing. Theatre is a place where we can explore those issues and emotions with honesty, compassion and reflection. Announcing our first productions of 2027 today, in addition to what’s coming up this autumn, I hope audiences will feel there is a rich variety of stories to experience at the Citz.”

These productions join an already exciting programme at the Citizens Theatre. This autumn we’ll premiere a major new production of George Orwell’s 1984 before it embarks on a Scottish tour.

We’re also delighted to announce our 2026 early years Christmas Show, Poggle’s Christmas Adventure by Barrowland Ballet. Running from 12 to 24 December alongside our main stage Christmas Show, this warm-hearted 50-minute sensory dance theatre experience is designed for children aged 18 months to seven years. Featuring live music, clapping rhythms, comedy and an imaginatively changing world for young audiences to explore, it marks a welcome return for Barrowland Ballet following the success of The Gift at the Citz last year.
