A Citizens Theatre production
Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off
13 Feb - 06 Mar
Event details
‘Once upon a time, there were twa queens on the wan green island, and the wan green island was split inty twa kingdoms. But no equal kingdoms . . .’
Celebrating the richly poetic Scots language, Liz Lochhead’s mighty text explores the deadly rivalry between two of history’s most fascinating women: Scotland’s glamorous 16th century queen, Mary and her calculating English cousin and fellow ruler, Elizabeth I.
Heaving with theatricality and gallus wit, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off weaves political relevance with fairytale storytelling. 40 years since it first premiered, this major new production directed by Finn den Hertog brings the Scottish classic to a new generation of audiences.
