Meet the cast of Small Acts of Love

Today, we’re thrilled to reveal the full cast of Small Acts of Love – a powerful new play with music and the first production to launch the main stage in September.

A collage of headshots of actors

This moving production explores the extraordinary bonds formed between the people of Lockerbie and the American families affected by the Pan Am 103 atrocity. Written by the brilliant playwright Frances Poet, with an original score by Ricky Ross (Deacon Blue), Small Acts of Love is presented in collaboration with the National Theatre of Scotland – and marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for the Citizens Theatre.

‘To be announcing our cast for Small Acts of Love today is an exciting and pivotal moment in our journey home. Ranging from some of the most experienced and well-known actors in Scotland to newly graduated stars of the future, this cast and this production announce the ambition and quality of the new Citizens Theatre. And that quality is matched by the creative team who include Olivier Award winning lighting designer Bruno Poet and designer Tom Piper (who has recently revived his celebrated ‘poppy installation’ at the Tower of London). With only a few weeks to go until the start of rehearsals, the whole company is preparing to welcome artists and audiences to our fantastic new building for the first time in 7 years.’

The story celebrates connection, compassion, and the strength found in community. It’s brought to life by a phenomenal ensemble of 14 actors, including: Ewan Donald, Simon Donaldson, Blythe Duff, Barrie Hunter, Robbie Jack, Beth Marshall, Hilary MacLean, Jayne McKenna, Jo Servi, Naomi Stirrat, and Mandi Symonds. They’re joined by emerging artists Lewis Fleming, Holly Howden Gilchrist, and Nicholas Marshall.

We’re especially proud to welcome Holly and Nicholas as this year’s Citizens Theatre Graduate Actors – you’ll also see them in our festive production of Beauty and the Beast later this year.

Live music will be performed on stage by a stunning five-piece roots band featuring Gavin Whitworth, Jessica Kerr, Jill O’Sullivan, Cammy Maxwell and Louis Abbott.

Our production is brought to life by a remarkable creative team.

Set design comes from Tom Piper (Nora: A Doll’s House, Cyrano, Hamlet) with costume design by Jessica Worrall (Red Riding Hood, The Comedy of Errors), whose bold visual storytelling has helped define some of our most striking shows. Movement direction is by Emily Jane Boyle, whose dynamic work on Trainspotting, This Restless House, and Nora: A Doll’s House brought physical precision and emotional depth to the stage. Lighting design is by internationally renowned Bruno Poet, whose award-winning work spans everything from Frankenstein at the National Theatre to large-scale productions like The Witches and Macbeth at Donmar Warehouse.

Together, this extraordinary team brings huge creative ambition, theatrical invention, and a deep connection to the Citizens Theatre.

Small Acts of Love previews from 09 September as the centrepiece of our Homecoming festival – a joyful celebration of the Citz’s past, present and future The production runs until 04 October.

After years of making work across Glasgow, we’re finally coming home – and we can’t wait to welcome you back.
