One month to go until reopening

We can hardly believe it – after years of building, dreaming and planning, it’s just one month until we throw open the doors of the Citizens Theatre and welcome you back.

On Saturday 23 August 2025, we reopen our beautiful building with a Homecoming Festival — a joyful, city-wide invitation to explore, celebrate and reconnect. We’ve missed you, and we’ve missed the magic that happens when people gather here. Now, it’s time to come together again.

We’re kicking things off with a community procession in the Gorbals, led by two custom-made puppets inspired by the Comedy and Tragedy statues that watch over our building. There’ll be music, poetry, and a co-created living heritage banner celebrating the many voices that shape who we are. The parade ends with a moment we’ve all been waiting for: stepping back inside the Citizens Theatre.

After the procession, we’re keeping the doors wide open for our Open House weekend — and we’d love you to join us.

Come in, have a wander, take part in free workshops and drop-in activities – you can even get a chance to stand on the main stage. Whether you’re bursting to get hands-on or just want to soak up the atmosphere, everyone is welcome.

From 28 August to 5 September, the celebrations continue with a brilliant line-up of bookable events — from First Look tours of the new building to creative taster sessions and special workshops. It’s the perfect way to explore what the new Citz has to offer and be part of the story as it unfolds over our opening weeks.

Kate Denby, Executive Director, said: “The reopening of the Citizens Theatre is a landmark moment — not just for the building, but for everyone who holds the Citz close to their heart. Our Homecoming year is all about creativity, community and connection, and we’re so proud to be opening our doors with a programme that invites everyone to be part of our next chapter.”

Catrin Evans, Participate Director, added: “The Homecoming Festival is inspired by our incredible new building — but it’s also about much more. It’s about reconnecting with our neighbours, welcoming new voices and celebrating creativity as a form of home-making. Whether you’ve been part of the Citz story for years or are walking through our doors for the first time, we can’t wait to welcome you.”

Then it’s curtain up! On 12 September, live performance returns to our main stage with the world premiere of Small Acts of Love, a powerful new play by Frances Poet, featuring original songs by Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue. Inspired by true events, it tells the moving story of the extraordinary friendships forged between Lockerbie residents and American families in the wake of the Pan Am 103 atrocity. Featuring a large ensemble cast of 14 and a live roots band, this is theatre with heart, humanity and a powerful sense of place.

In October, we open the doors to our brand new Studio Theatre with two productions created by our Participate groups. First up is Close by Young Co. (from 8 October), followed by Making Your Mark by the Community Collective (from 22 October) — two fresh, original pieces that put community voices and lived experience centre stage.

The Homecoming Festival is about more than a building. It’s about people, stories, creativity and connection. Whether it’s your first time through our doors or you’ve been part of the Citz story for years, we want you to feel at home here.

So mark your calendars — and we’ll see you soon.
