Casting Policy
Casting
The Citizens Theatre building is currently closed for a major redevelopment. We hope to welcome back audiences, artists and participants in spring 2025. This policy and opportunities for future casting will be updated regularly, especially as we approach the reopening of the theatre and are therefore, able to return to a full programme of work.
The Citizens Theatre is committed to promoting theatre as an activity for everyone – whether it is part of our work in local communities, on our main stage or in our new studio. We want to eliminate discrimination and encourage diversity across all areas of our work. Our aim is for our workforce to be truly representative of all sections of society.
In our casting policy, we want to ensure opportunities are given to excellent artists from all walks of life. We are actively seeking greater gender and ethnic representation within our casts. We are committed to creating opportunities for D/deaf and disabled performers in the new theatre.
We are also committed to supporting and developing the careers of actors who are born, raised or living in Scotland. We will prioritise these actors in our future work.
We pledge to provide equality and fairness for all in our employment and not discriminate on grounds of:
- race
- nationality
- ethnic background
- citizen or immigration status
- sex
- sexual orientation
- gender(s)
- gender expression
- age
- religion
- language
- deaf
- disability
- neurodiversity
- chronic conditions
- mental health
- socio-economic status
- educational/training background
- class
- pregnancy or maternity/paternity
- marriage or civil partnership
- hair texture or style
- skin tone
- cultural markings and/or tattoos due to religious rituals from pre-colonial cultural practice
In doing this, we believe that the theatre we make, and the arts more broadly, will remain open and relevant to everyone.
Over the past ten years we have employed two graduate actors for 9 – 12 months every year. These posts are funded by The Robertson Trust and Garrick Trust. We are currently in discussion about how these internships will operate in the new Citizens Theatre.
Auditions
The majority of our casting is through agents. We do not have an in-house casting director. We work with a range of established casting directors or cast our productions ourselves. We will inform agents of casting opportunities once projects are confirmed. Please talk to your agent about future opportunities at the Citizens Theatre.
We will occasionally offer a role directly to an actor but aim to audition for most roles that we cast.
Twice a year we will create opportunities for Scottish actors who we do not know, or who do not have representation, to meet with us so that we widen our knowledge of Scottish actors for potential future collaboration. Further details of this will be announced as we approach the opening of the redeveloped theatre.
If you have a question about casting at the Citizens Theatre, please contact Jackie Muir, Production Administrator.
