Spend the day with the Citizens Theatre and experience George Orwell’s dystopian world on stage, alongside a series of educational offers that deepen engagement with the production. For the fullest experience, combine the education tour and workshop. The workshop blends practical drama with literary exploration, enhancing students’ understanding of both the text and its theatrical adaptation. The tour offers valuable insight into how productions are brought to life, giving students a behind-the-scenes perspective.

These events are for those studying Drama and English, with curriculum-linked activities that explore key themes, characters, and theatrical interpretation for 1984.

3 hours (ahead of 1984 performance)

£12.50 per person. Teachers free.

1984 performance tickets are £10 per person for school groups and must be purchased alongside the workshop.

Between the tour, workshop and performance, there’ll be time and space for eating food.

About the workshop (90 minutes)

Led by professional theatre practitioners, this workshop supports exam preparation and critical thinking through active learning, helping to build students’ long-term understanding of how live performance is created.

During the workshop, students will:

  • Explore how themes such as surveillance, control, truth, propaganda, and rebellion are brought to life in performance
  • Investigate how character relationships and power dynamics are translated from page to stage
  • Examine how Nineteen Eighty-Four has been adapted into a playtext, and how this is realised through design and directorial choices
  • Develop a range of analytical and creative responses linked to National 5 and Higher outcomes in Drama and English

About the tour (90 minutes)

This session supports learning around theatre production, context, and audience experience.

During the tour, students will:

  • Learn about the building’s Victorian architecture, theatrical heritage, and the wide range of productions it has hosted
  • Gain insight into how a theatre’s technical infrastructure shapes performance and audience experience
  • Explore how front-of-house and backstage areas operate (subject to availability), and the opportunities created when productions are planned, rehearsed, built, and performed under one roof
  • Discover the Citizens Theatre’s role in Glasgow’s cultural life

Sperate tours and workshops are available on other days.
