If  I’m remembered, I would like people to say: “Oh yes, we had some really good times, they did some really good shows.”

Giles was Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre from 1969 – 2003. He presided over one of the most celebrated periods in the theatre’s history, where, alongside his co-directors Robert David MacDonald and Philip Prowse, he ensured the Citz became a European creative powerhouse in the heart of the Gorbals.  He put the audience at the heart of the company, introducing a repertoire of plays and exciting productions at a pioneering low-ticket price.

Giles died in August 2025 – on the same day that the Citz reopened its doors after a major redevelopment.

Join us in a celebration of his unique contribution to life in the city.

The afternoon will include readings, music and tributes to Giles’s life and work as we celebrate this great man of Glasgow.

All proceeds from this event will go to the GilesHavergal Memorial Fund.  Additional donations can be made as part of your ticket purchase.

Giles Havergal Memorial Fund

Giles Havergal was a true visionary. He pushed boundaries and created exceptional work while ensuring everyone felt welcome and included. He inspired so many.

To honour him, we have established the Giles Havergal Memorial Fund. This fund will continue his legacy, by supporting artist development and the production of work on stage at the Citizens Theatre. It will be used to support new talent – as Giles did when many of today’s biggest names of stage and screen cut their teeth on the Citz stage.
