Visiting Company

National Theatre of Scotland present a co-production with Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh - an extraordinary examination of a lifestyle in decline - written by Abi Morgan. Starring Maureen Beattie.

“a culture clash between two very different orthodoxies trying to find meaning and enlightenment in a fast-food, hi-tech, wonder-drug world”
The Herald

Dr Richard Garfield has given Ursula a difficult choice. She is the mother superior in-waiting of a convent that has been given the opportunity to take part in his revolutionary scientific study.

Ursula must weigh up the value of preserving her faith versus embracing science as her cloistered existence is rocked to its core.

Abi Morgan’s new play is an extraordinary examination of a lifestyle in decline, but one whose dignity and faith could hold the key to the issues of our times, our ageing population and the decline of our minds.

A human play about loneliness, ageing, science and the loss of our sense of self.

I saw this last night and it was wonderful. I did not want to go having seen the trailer but was encouraged to do so by my partner. I am glad I did but have to say the trailer does not do it justice and does not refelct the overall content of the whole play. The play is not as dark as the trailer portrays it.

This play by Abi Morgan intrigues me enormously and therefore I would like to see it. I'm away on holiday when it is in Edinburgh but you say it tours. I hope you will inform me of the tour dates especially if they include dates in England
